For Parents
Most people — both male and female — develop acne at some point during their
teenage years, so your child is not alone. If you're looking to help you teen treat his
or her acne, read on.
Listen to your teen
Teens may be reluctant to discuss personal issues with their parents, so it may be up to you to
initiate the conversation.
Find out if acne — no matter how mild — is bothering your
teen and remind him or her that since acne is so common among young people, there shouldn't be any
shame in talking about it. If your child has had unsatisfactory results with over-the-counter or
infomercial acne products, it may be time to see a dermatologist.
Arrange an appointment with a dermatologist
Dermatologists are skincare experts that can assess your teen's skin health, recommend the most
appropriate treatment, and provide advice for avoiding acne. Since your child can't make an appointment on his or
her own, you hold the key to treatment. If you already know a dermatologist, that's a great start,
and if not, talk to your family doctor first.
Find a dermatologist near you
Ask about prescription BenzaClin®
BenzaClin® can produce clearer skin in as little as 2 weeks. BenzaClin® is a combination of
benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin in one gel that is easly applied to the acne on your teen's face.
A dermatologist can tell you if BenzaClin® is right for your teen and how to use it.
Make sure your teen sticks with it
Digital photos, text messaging, music downloads... these days, everything is about instant gratification.
Not so with treating acne, which requires patience and diligence. Make sure your teen follows the
doctor's instructions for as long as recommended and incorporate treating acne into your
teen's daily routine. You don't have to talk about it over breakfast, but a quiet reminder on the side —
or a text message — will go a long way.
